At El Hogar de Mika we work to transform the lives of abandoned and vulnerable dogs and cats in the province of Granada.

Did you know?
Currently, more than 286,000 dogs and cats are taken in by animal shelters each year in Spain, according to the 2024 study by the Affinity Foundation entitled ‘He would never do that’. Every hour, more than 33 animals are abandoned in Spain, resulting in 785 abandonments per day and a total of 23,890 stray cats and dogs per month.
One of the autonomous communities with the highest rate of animal abandonment is Andalusia (Fundación Affinity, 2024). Our region ranks first in terms of animal abuse in Spain, with 13,092 reports of animal assault since 2008 (SEPRONA, 2014). Furthermore, according to data from the Crime Statistics System provided by the Ministry of the Interior in 2022, Andalusia is the region with the highest number of reports of animal abuse, accounting for 19.6% of the national total.
According to CACMA (2023), animal abandonment continues to increase by 15% more than in previous years, and specifically in Granada in 2020, the incidence of abandonment increased by 30% more than in recent years.
About Us
For all the reasons mentioned above, El Hogar de Mikawas created, a non-profit association made up of volunteers who dedicate our free time altruistically to the defence and protection of abandoned and community domestic animals in our territory.
Our association falls within the scope of Organic Law 1/2002, of 22 March, regulating the Right of Association, and Law 4/2006, of 23 June, on Associations in Andalusia, as we carry out our activities mainly in the autonomous community of Andalusia.
